A letter to Ewan's teacher

The second grade teachers wanted get-to-know the kid letters from the parents.  Here's the one we sent in for Ewan...

We hope the school year has started out well for your classes.  So far, no complaints from Ewan.  We hope this letter helps you understand Ewan a little more.  Here we go…

Personality:  Ewan has the best imagination.  He could play all day by himself or with others in his imaginary world.  He likes to draw and color different “people” (pokemon, robots, etc) and then cut them out (because that’s what brings them to life).  He loves to build and create with Legos.  The spare room becomes his domain where he can build worlds and armies that can battle each other.

Learning:  Ewan was in the higher level math class last year, and knew it.  He was proud of this fact.  He was also excited to come home the other day and tell us about the multiplication on a math sheet from class.  Ewan is a decent reader.  I feel like he reads because he has to, not because he wants to.  We have tons of books at home, but I feel he hasn’t found any that have just excited him.  Now, he does like to listen every night when we read to all the boys at bedtime.  Right now, we are reading Holes out loud to them.

Interacting with others:  Ewan likes to play-imaginary play or just running around.  He likes to commandeer the order of play and always has ideas for the way the game should go.  I always think Ewan would be a great Dungeon Master J.

Special interests:  Ewan would like you to know that his special interests are: climbing, Legos, Pokemon, his ipod, drawing and origami.  Ewan will also be playing soccer this fall and is an orange belt in karate (although he did not list those as his interests).

Unique insights:  Ewan is the third child in a family of six kiddos.  The ages of the kids are 11, 9, 7 (Ewan), 5, 3 and 1.  Four boys followed by two girls.  He is an excellent big brother to his sisters.  Very patient with them.  I think that Ewan likes it when he stands out from others, in a good way.  He’s trying to make his mark in the family.  I think Ewan wants to be a leader.  I think Ewan tolerates school.  He goes because he has to.  If we decided to homeschool, Ewan would be first to be on board.  It’s not that he hates school or learning.  Ewan would just rather spend his time imagining and creating.  School just hasn’t been a great place for that, so far.
